3 Tips for Dealing with Electricity in Your New Home
By The Good Greek

There’s always a ton of tasks involved in moving to a new place, and figuring out where all your electronics are going to go is one of them. However, you may run into problems you didn’t anticipate, like too few outlets or faulty wiring. Of course, you want to get everything up to speed as soon as possible. Here are three ideas to consider when working with electricity in your new home.

Safety First

Before you start randomly plugging in lamps and turning on gadgets, make sure you’re doing so safely. Safety tips include not overloading your outlets, checking and cleaning items like exhaust fans, watching for damaged cords and keeping seldom-used devices unplugged. Also, allowing plenty of air circulation for busy appliances such as refrigerators and dryers will greatly decrease the chances of overheating. Tune-ups on large appliances like heaters and AC units will help them to run more efficiently. Most importantly, follow instructions for an appliance’s use to lessen possible dangers.

Detail Your Plan of Action

If you’ve pinpointed potential issues or have decided to do some work like putting in more outlets or rewiring a particular room, make a list of what you want to add. Your floor plan should show a number of things, including the wiring, so you’ll want to have a copy of it handy to consult during the project. You should put in a good amount of research to ensure that what you want to do is both feasible and doable before you begin the job, as this will save you from some possibly nasty–and costly–errors.

Do it Yourself or Hire a Pro?

Something small, like installing a programmable thermostat or a visual doorbell, can be a simple DIY project. You can find plenty of instructional videos online that will guide you step by step. However, even seasoned DIYers balk at attempting anything related to electrical systems due to the intricacy and conceivable danger involved. The bottom line is that if you don’t feel comfortable doing something yourself no matter how uncomplicated it may appear to be, don’t be afraid to call in an electrician. If you’re in a new city, ask your neighbors who they’ve used in the past or see if one company keeps showing up in your area, a good sign of reliability.

So many things that make our lives comfortable rely on electricity. Whether adding or repairing, safety and knowledge are essential.
