Dec,2020Moving over the holidays makes sense for many people. Reasons for moving during the holidays include having time off work, being out of school for the winter break, having recently graduated from college, being a great planner and having friends and family who can give you an alternate way to celebrate Christmas.
If any of those fit your current situation, then moving during the holidays is a smart idea. While moving companies remain busy, they may be able to better accommodate your schedule because fewer people are moving.
In some cases, it’s impossible to get away from work long enough to handle all the packing and other responsibilities of moving. But the two-week period that runs from the week of Christmas through the New Year gives many people the chance to get away long enough to handle all the details of a move.
Ideally, no one wants to move kids during the school year. However, for some people, a move during the summer might be impossible. The second best choice is the holiday break when kids are out of school for an extended period of time. It’s a lot easier for kids to start the New Year at a new school than doing it during a short break.
College students who graduate at the end of the fall term are often moving to the city where they have landed their first job. Or, they move somewhere to start their job search in the new year. Whatever the case, moving is going to be a reality over the holiday break.
If you are a good planner and have the time to make a moving plan, then moving during the holidays is an option to consider. This is not a good time of year to move if you typically put everything together at the last minute. But if you buy your supplies early, start packing your house room by room and can move during a day when traffic is not so bad (definitely not the week of Christmas or the Saturday before), then moving during the holidays might work for you.
If you move before Christmas, you might be able to set some holiday decorations once you arrive. But it’s far less stressful for you if families or friends can step up and invite you to their home for the holidays. If such an arrangement is offered to you, take it! It makes moving during the holidays that much more of a viable option.
Not every household can conveniently move during the holidays. But for some, there are reasons enough to make it a smart choice. If you find yourself in that category, your first step should be to check out moving guides and avoid common mistakes, and partner with a professional, experienced moving company.
