8 Tips For Unpacking Your New Home When You Have a Baby

8 Tips For Unpacking Your New Home When You Have a Baby
By The Good Greek

If you’re moving with a baby, then you’re already bracing yourself in anticipation of a crazy few days. But it’s going to be OK! We at Good Greek Moving & Storage have seen many people move with babies over the years, and we have learned some tips that can help the move go smoother.

Read on for some of those tips. They are all aimed at making it easier for the baby to stay calm and for you to retain your sanity! Having a baby when moving presents challenges, but it’s nothing you can’t overcome with a dependable, professional moving partner.

Let The Movers Know

If the mover comes from an in-home inspection to evaluate your move as we do at Good Greek, that’s the time to let them know that you will have a baby along for the move. That way, the movers can make a few adjustments to make the move easier for you, such as making sure you move at the time of day that’s best for your baby’s schedule. They also can take extra safety precautions knowing a baby is in the home.

Unpack the Nursery First

This is key. If movers know a baby is along for the move, they can pack the nursery items into the truck last, allowing them to be the first unpacked. That way you can give the baby some comfort in the new home with all the nursery items set up and ready.

Stick to the Schedule

Babies (and many people) thrive on a schedule. Try to plan your move for a time that works best for the baby’s schedule of eating, naps and play time. Don’t expect it to be perfect, but the more you can stick to the schedule, the better.

Don’t Unpack All At Once

Once the movers have everything in place, don’t try to unpack every box. Save packing time for when the baby is asleep during naptime or bedtime. Of course, that will require quiet unpacking time, but it’s better (and safer) than trying to unpack while also managing the needs of an awake baby.

Have Food Prepared in Advance

Before moving day arrives, pack the baby food you will need, including bottles or any snacks you give them. Make sure you have all the baby food ready to unpack first, as well as the baby’s highchair (again, this is something to tell the movers about).

Have Toys On Hand

If there was ever a time to give your baby a new toy to entertain them, this is that time. If you must unpack while the baby is awake, it will go a lot easier if you can give them a new toy or old favorite to play with while you get the job done.

The Essentials Bag

Parents know what to put into an essentials bag, but here’s a quick checklist just to help: diapers, wipes, baby powder and diaper cream, teething rings if needed, a few clean onesies, favorite toys, favorite blanket, and anything else the baby needs to make them happy. Because you want them happy!

Baby-Proof Home

As you unpack, don’t forget to immediately baby-proof your new home. It will help you feel less stressful and will allow your baby to feel more secure.

These tips can help making unpacking when you move with a baby that much easier. Don’t expect everything little thing to go smoothly – that way, when it does, you will be pleasantly surprised!
