Are you planning to move in the near future? You will need to have all of your belongings and affairs in order before you start settling into your new home. Emerald Hills has some great tips to help you get ready for your big day.

Keep your belongings organized. Properly labeling and storing boxes in a central location will help you keep track of your belongings, and ultimately make your life easier once they reach your new home. Label your boxes with stickers to help keep track of which room in your new home the box belongs in, as well as a list of the boxes contents. Keep a master list of what has been packed and moved already and what has

not so you do not leave anything behind. Ensure that you have all of the necessary packing supplies, including boxes, tape, labels, and bubble-wrap before you start the packing process.

Make it a team effort. Moving requires a lot of work, from packing up boxes, to having them shipped or driven to your new home, and then unpacking those boxes. It is a task that cannot be done alone. Ask your friends or family for help on moving day. Any amount of assistance can make the process of moving that much easier, whether they offer to help load the moving truck or bring snacks for you and your assembled team. Be sure to plan far enough in advance and set a definite moving date so those who have offered to help you move can keep their schedules free on that day.

Acquaint yourself with your new home. This can include the interior and exterior spaces of your home, as well as your street and neighborhood. If you are moving to a new town, contact the local government office or Chamber of Commerce to access insider information on your area. Often, these authorities will inform you of the location of things like the local police station, library, parks, and even where you can get your driver’s license. It is also a good idea to do your own research of your new home to find out highly recommended places to eat or where the best shopping districts are.

Don’t forget the little things. It is easy to get swept up in packing boxes and wrapping up bulky furniture items, but it is important that you do not let the little things slip through the cracks. Plan to stop at your local post office at some point to have your address changed. Contact you phone, cable, internet, heat, and electric providers and inform them of the move. Cancel any subscriptions to newspapers or magazines, and have things like money in bank accounts or prescriptions at pharmacies transferred to a branch closer to your new home.

Get rid of the excess. Packing all of your belongings into a truck and moving them from one location to another can really put things into perspective. Take an inventory of all of your belongings, and think about those items that you do not use or no longer have a need for. Donate old or gently used items like furniture, electronics, and clothing to Good Will or another local charity. To make some extra money to subset the costs of a move, hold a yard sale to get rid of unwanted or unused items.
