Project Dynamo: Tampa-Based Nonprofit Saving Americans Overseas

Good Greek Moving & Storage is proud to highlight Project Dynamo, a Tampa-based nonprofit that focuses on rescuing Americans and allies from hostile territories worldwide.

Project Dynamo began by helping people get out of Afghanistan after U.S. troops withdrew in 2021. Co-founded by veteran Bryan Stern and named after the 1940 British evacuation of Dunkirk, the organization has since expanded to Ukraine following Russia’s February 2022 invasion and continues to support Americans and allies in crisis zones around the world.

The group has no ties to the U.S. government — it’s run by civilians, primarily veterans, and funded entirely by private donations. It operates through two coordinated branches, Digital Dunkirk and Dynamo II, supporting at-risk Americans through ground evacuation and air transport. Anyone can help fund ongoing rescue missions by donating through the Project Dynamo website.

Project Dynamo: Key Takeaways

  • Project Dynamo is a Tampa-based nonprofit that helps Americans and allies evacuate hostile territories — it started with Afghanistan and expanded to Ukraine.
  • It operates two coordinated branches: Digital Dunkirk (a veterans’ coalition for ground evacuation) and Dynamo II (air transport).
  • Project Dynamo has no U.S. government ties — civilians and veterans run it, funded entirely by private donations.
  • Good Greek Moving & Storage publicly supports Project Dynamo as part of its broader community giving and veteran-support efforts.

Digital Dunkirk and Dynamo II: two coordinated operations

Project Dynamo combines a ground-evacuation arm (Digital Dunkirk) with an air-transport branch (Dynamo II).

Digital Dunkirk — veterans’ coalition for ground evacuation

Digital Dunkirk is the organization’s ground arm. A coalition of veterans coordinates to locate at-risk Americans and allies in hostile territory, then moves them to temporary, safer locations to await final evacuation. Their military backgrounds equip them for operations in dangerous areas that the U.S. government cannot or will not undertake.

Dynamo II — the air transport branch

Dynamo II provides the air-transport capability. Once Digital Dunkirk locates and stages people for evacuation, Dynamo II flies them out of the hostile territory. Together, the two branches make complex, multi-stage evacuations possible that would otherwise be beyond the reach of a civilian rescue effort.

Expansion to Ukraine in February 2022

The group began planning Ukraine operations after President Biden said the U.S. government would not run rescue missions in the country. Within minutes of the first explosions in Kyiv, the team already had about two dozen people moving toward safety. Spokesperson James Judge told Florida Politics: “They are currently traversing the Ukrainian countryside and trying to make their way to an American embassy in a neighboring country. The evacuation began minutes after our team on the ground physically felt the nearby explosions in Kyiv.” In the time since, the organization has carried out numerous high-profile rescues, including evacuating hundreds of people from Mariupol and rescuing premature babies from a Ukrainian hospital.

Funding the mission

By early 2022, Project Dynamo had raised more than $1.4 million for its rescue operations — money that funds evacuations for Americans and allies in life-threatening situations. Spero Georgedakis, founder and CEO of Good Greek Moving & Storage, encourages people to give what they can to support the mission. Donations can be made directly through the Project Dynamo website.
